We all know that Lilly prints are constantly inspired by the sea…and sand…and sun. And what’s better than sitting on the beach and soaking in the rays with a fun beverage in your hand? (with those little pink drink umbrellas, of course!) Well the print studio always gets a liiiiittle kookier during Summer line planning, (as beach vacays, fun drinks, food and friends are what they think about) so it’s no surprise that we looked to our friends at Gosling’s for some inspiration for our Summer ’11 line.
First Lady Michelle Obama was feted as the guest of honor at the annual Congressional Club luncheon held last Wednesday at the Washington Hilton, hosted by spouses of Members of Congress. At the bi-partisan luncheon, Mrs. Obama spoke to the guests about her Joining Forces campaign, and danced to the tunes of Latin pop icon Gloria Estefan.
More than 2,000 guests attended the three-hour Florida-themed affair, including spouses of Cabinet members, the US Supreme Court and the leadership of the Senate and House. During her remarks, Mrs. Obama honored members of the armed forces and their families. The event was chaired by Mrs. Pat Mica, wife of Rep. John Mica of Florida. Each year, the event theme is inspired by the state where the event chair lives. How fitting that Mrs. Mica would think of Lilly Pulitzer to carry the Floridian themed luncheon! (We think it was a fabulous idea!)
Lee Jofa, our soon-to-launch fabric partner, provided the table linens so guests could dine at Lilly Pulitzer tables. Every guest, including The First Lady, received a Lilly Pulitzer printed gift bag. Lilly Pulitzer also provided the white dresses seen on the lovely attendants! Guests had a fabulous time and the beach theme had everyone wishing summer would come just a little faster. We were honored to have been a part of the event and want to thank Mrs. Mica for including Lilly!
Well we think our whole cocktail delivery sparkles but we wanted to highlight one of our best selling beauties. We luxed up the shift and her name is Karlee! She is the perfect dress for that summer party with jazz! Or — dress her down with your McKim’s and sprinkle just enough sparkle to a summer brunch! (already sold out online!) Karlee’s floating jewels (a design trend we’re looooving!) creates a look that requires no extra jewelry- shimmer & shine included!
Not sure you can pull off the sheer panel adorned with beading detail? (we think you absolutely can) Fear not. Grace your summer party with Crystal, Julianne, Daphne or Kelley!
One of our favorite Pack for Paradise partners over the last year has been JetBlue. They’ve partnered with us on several occasions to fly our lucky winners to paradise (it’s easy to love them when they deliver you to heaven!) So when they reached out to us and asked about Janie’s baggage, we thought it was a liiiittle personal but we listened. Turns out they put together a fun program promoting the fact that they offer customers a first checked bag-free all while raising money for children in America. We love JetBlue and we thought it sounded fun so we got on board by donating a Janie-signed Originals Carry On! (complete with an autographed headshot of our favorite blonde along with a signed luggage tag!)
JetBlue does a better job describing the program so here are the details straight from them!

We’re always quoting some of the fun things Lilly said during her time in building this brand, but the one quote that really resonated with her consumers; the one with more meaning for all of us is, “If you have no charity in your heart, you have the worse type of heart trouble.”
Based on Lilly’s belief in giving back to her community (and having fun while doing it!), the Lilly Pulitzer brand is always doing things, sometimes small, sometimes big, in supporting national and local organizations, events and communities. One of the ways we do this is through our corporate stores program called “Shop & Shares.” If you’re a fan on our Facebook page, you’ve likely seen us post something about these parties from time to time. Shop & Shares are a fun way to raise money & awareness about your organization while, in true Lilly form, throwing a great bash!
I went straight to our Dress Man, Abraham, for the details behind the stunning Battenburg lace — seen (for the first time ever!!) in the latest Summer delivery of cocktail dresses from Lilly. Here’s what he had to say about this gorgeous new fabrication …
Battenburg lace is lace created by woven tape that is hand stitched together into intricate patterns. Our pattern art work was hand drawn by Victoria Davis and I to create a truly Lilly Lace. Each panel is created by hand; giving each garment a truly unique, one-of-kind quality. The pattern was designed to flatter the figure and curve with the body. The new Marie-Kate style is a great figure-friendly shape and the Bowen is the ultimate strapless dress- we love it so much!
Abraham also gave us a quick Battenburg history lesson which sounded suspiciously similar to this. All you really need to know? These dresses are truly beautiful and will cause you to looooong for lace!
So when the print team was in Winter Park last year, they were CHALLENGED by a customer (*ahem* Chris Richards- we’re looking at you!!) to bring back the Streaker print. (dare we say anything about the fact that it took a man to challenge us to bring back one of our naughtiest prints?!) All of a sudden, the topic of…being nude (in print, thank you) …was everywhere!
Emails came pouring in…please do the streaker print!; we love the streaker print! Ok, slight exaggeration BUT…Summer makes us so happy we want to throw ON our Lilly and then RIP IT OFF so we cannonball into the [insert body of water here] pool, lake, ocean. Toiles have become a favorite around here and secretly the print team loves them because we can hide soooo many fun things in them!
So viola- the Streaker print reinvented! Look closely, you never know what you might find!

Birthdays are a reason to have a party! It was just 5 years ago that I came to Lilly (I know, time flies- I feel like this has been my home forever!), and just 5 years ago that we opened our spectacular store in the King of Prussia mall. To celebrate, we invited all our friends, gave away goodies, snacked on Capitol Grill yummies and popped quite a few bottles of bubbly.
A couple of years ago, the print team and I started visiting stores and painting watercolors for customers. It was new to show off our prints being done first-hand and everyone loved doing it; and I think you all loved seeing it! Well celebrating Lilly Loves the Arts this year has brought an evolution to our artwork. A couple of months ago at the Ardmore opening, we decided to all paint one giant canvas- together!! (two at a time, rotating from painting to chatting with customers, to having a few toasts!) It is soooooo fuuun! We have now mastered the art of painting giant floral prints!
Every single day, my team’s artistic talent knocks me off my feet. This is just another example of how special Lilly Pulitzer is. No one does what we do! The most amazing people love the individuality of the brand – it is just top-to-bottom, inside-and-out FUN. This was absolutely evident at last night’s event.
Cheers to Darcy, Margaret, Clare, Nancy, Steph, Pat…every single amazing person in the “KOP” store (we love you so so so much). We are so proud of the store, thank you for always smiling and making Lilly what it is!
