We’re buzzing about this print!

Posted on July 13, 2011 in Inspiration by | Comment

The print team was in love with the honeybee and snuck them into a handful of prints this summer, including Take It Higher in Jade Green & Bright Navy. You might be saying to yourself, “What’s to celebrate about this annoying insect that interrupts my lazy afternoons sipping sweet tea on my porch?” Well funny you should ask…

The bee has a lot of symbolism & mythology surrounding it.  We love that bees, the hive specifically, symbolizes what’s great about community and how working together brings great results.  How very practical. Buuuut… we might be a teensy more drawn to the Queen Bee because she symbolizes regalness and royalty.  (and isn’t it just timely with our visit from Kate & Wills?!)  Or maybe you’re more the astute type and would appreciate that wearing bees may make you look smarter because they’re also a symbol of knowledge & intelligence.

We’re certainly not experts on bees (unless googling makes people experts!) but we just think they’re plain sweet.  We hope you do too!

Of course I may play favorites to my daughter, Rachel (pictured in some of the store photos) who also works at the store. My wonderful husband oversees the financial end of the business and Teddy, our Wheaten Terrier, is a customer (and our!) favorite.  Since opening, we have brightened the lives of many Tampa Bay Ladies and Girls.

Not Everyone Likes to Chill Out

Posted on July 7, 2011 in More Fun by | 2 comments

Yes, it is July and yes, it is ninety degrees outside so why, oh why are we talking about sweaters?!? Because doesn’t it seem, no matter how hot it is outside, headed indoors = freezing by way of over-airconditioning??  So that friends, is why we want you to cozy up with Lilly this summer so you’re not chilled out.

Our Connell Sweater is the perfect wrap sweater for throwing on when you’re lunching with the ladies, shopping, or just running errands. (seriously- why are grocery stores so fafafa-reeezing?!?!)  Expect to see a lot of this fav sweater in fall and resort too!

Besides stashing an armload of candy in your oversized Docksider tote (we won’t tell if you don’t!), grabbing our Clara Sweater to throw over top of your oh-so-adorable Lilly dress is an absolute MUST if you’re headed to the movies this summer.  It also makes the perfect accessory when you grab a bite to eat after the movie and inevitably sit right.below.the.huge.vent. (is it just me that manages to do that every time?)

Our Savana Shawl- not a sweater, now is it?  No, but it is the PERFECT Wedding accessory.  It takes you from church to ceremony in a breeze! (pun intended- couldn’t help myself)  It’s perfectly packable too- roll it up in your purse, leave it in the back seat of your car or keep it folded over your chair at work.  (the only place it won’t really fit is in your date’s pocket with your keys, phone, lipgloss & drivers license- get a purse already!)

After all, nobody likes a cold shoulder ;)

In the Guest House with Joyce and Nicki of Macaroni Kid

Posted on July 6, 2011 in More Fun by | 1 comment

We always like to bring fun and interesting folks into our Guest House to have a little chat. Today we have the lovely ladies from Macaroni Kid. We’re suckers for entrepreneurial women (can you blame us??) especially those that hail from chic spots, like the Hamptons. So today, we introduce Joyce & Nicki, two well-connected, beach-loving Hamptonite moms and long-time best friends who concocted a fabulous idea over a bottle of wine one night in 2009… (coincidentally, a lot of Lilly ideas start that way too!)

Why did you start Macaroni Kid?

We saw a need in our small and seasonal community, to spread the word about the latest and greatest news, family activities and events that were always happening in our fun town. We always thought “I wish I had known about that!” So, we piloted a hyper-local free e-newsletter covering everything from story time at the Bridgehampton Library to kite flying on Cooper’s beach; the newest ice cream hot spot off 27 and of course, the Summer sale at Lilly in East Hampton. Apparently we weren’t the only moms in town craving this info because the response was overwhelming. Macaroni Kid was born!

How has Macaroni Kid grown so fast?

As we said, the response was overwhelming and pretty soon, all of our friends wanted in. (Lilly knows all about the power of friendship & business building!) Although the two of us are still loving life and publishing right in the Hamptons, Macaroni Kid is now in 370 communities across the country and we’re growing at a rate of 15% a month! We now have hundreds of “Publisher Moms” in local communities nationwide helping parents answer the question “What are we going to do today?!”

Tell us a little bit about life in the Hamptons as the original Macaroni Moms:

It’s hard not to feel the Lilly love around here! In fact, shopping in East Hampton is one of our favorite Saturday afternoon activities, along with heading to the CMEE Museum or Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton (where Nicki got her 1st job back in high school!) Of course, the fabulous restaurants (we love B. Smiths and Suki Zuki) aren’t torture either. But as much as we love mingling at Hampton hotspots, we also appreciate the less-inhabited areas, like Scott Cameron and Road D Beaches, the hiking trails in the winter, and our own backyards for a good-old barbeque, just the kids and the dogs!  We’re just ordinary moms with extraordinary friends – friends who have helped us turn Macaroni Kid into an amazing, nationwide community.

We’re proud to partner with these supermoms and their Lilly Lover friends across the country with a $400 Lilly Pulitzer giveaway! Just “like” Macaroni Kid on Facebook and check out the “Macaroni Kid Wants to Know” tab to be entered!  We love that these ladies never gave up on their great idea, rallied their friends to build their business and that they absolutely live a colorful life!

We’re aaaalllll about embroidery in our latest Summer deliveries.  Turns out, we’re all about the birds and the bees too.  There’s just something about Summer that gets you in the mood…  But somehow we think it’s less about the little bees buzzing around on Comb and Get It or our feathered friends on Bird is the Word and more about how you feel when you slip into our Bowen or Blossom or Stephanie Shift.

2011 Lunch at Lilly!

Posted on June 29, 2011 in More Fun by | 3 comments

Yesterday we had the pleasure of playing host to our 2011 Lunch at Lilly winners.  Decked out in Lilly, they enjoyed a tour of the Pink Palace, ate a special Lilly Lunch, got a sneak peak at our fall collection, and took a little field trip to our King of Prussia store- all super fun things to be sure but… the highlight of the day was definitely collaborating with our print designers who created custom prints for our visitors. We thought we’d introduce you to these lovely ladies (yes- all of our visitors were women!) and then showcase the adorable prints they helped design…

Kelly, a kilt designer, wanted more wild in her wardrobe and became a Lilly fan nearly five years ago. She lives right near our headquarters and two Lilly stores here in PA, giving her easy access to Lilly galore. Kelly brought her sister Amy along and we think this trip may juuust have turned Amy into a full-fledged Lilly Lover just like her sister.  Kelly’s favorite print is In the Skinny and Amy loves Stuffed Shells.

Nikki and Leesa’s Lilly obsession was easily recognized as they effortlessly referred to countless patterns, colors, and styles by name. These friends from Maryland were originally drawn to Lilly as new mothers when they realized the genius of the Lilly skort (mama and mini, mutually!). When asked about their favorite prints, Nikki recalled a light blue print with navy whales from over a decade ago and Leesa, a graphic designer, excitedly mentioned Skinny Dippin’.

Melissa is a mother of boys who don’t share her Lilly passion (no ties, guys?!). Luckily, her friend Diane appreciates pattern and palette so she was in good company. The two remember Lilly pre-revival and we are thrilled that they have remained Lilly-loyal. They keep it fun with prints of partying alligators and pink and green coral. (Can you guess which print is theirs?!) They both also love this Summer print.

Lisa and Savannah are a Lilly-loving mother daughter duo. When they are not busy browsing our newest selections, they spend their time wearing them, especially at one of their favorite places – the beach! Natives of Raleigh, North Carolina, Lisa and Savannah have both been wearing Lilly since they were young (and we see no signs of that changing!). This pair can’t get enough Cabanarama!

Nancy’s mother and father wore Lilly and now her own children, including her daughter Callie, are maintaining the family status as “generational Lilly Lovers.” Nancy is a fan of glow in the dark fireflies (name that print!). The only thing that rivals their Lilly fascination is their Mardi Gras obsession.

Robin and her daughter Kelly first started spotting and sporting Lilly at their beach house and are delighted about the new store near their permanent home in Asheville. For Mother’s Day, Kelly and her daughter wore matching Lilly dresses. Looks like we have another family of generational Lilly Lovers in the making! Hooray!

A Lilly loving mother generously sent her daughters Jackie and Joanna, to our Lilly Lunch after winning the trip herself. These preppy sisters both looked smashing in their Lilly dresses (we wouldn’t have been about to pick a daughter either!) Jackie is a fan of Stuffed Shells and Skinny Dippin’. Joanna’s favorite print included palm trees and monkeys- help her remember its name!

The ladies were paired up with a print designer to create their own prints. Here are the fruits of their labor! (though it was hardly laborious!)

Thank you to our wonderful Lilly Lovers who visited today- we loved having you! (and those who didn’t, be sure to visit us next year during Lunch at Lilly (held in March) so you can join us for Lunch at the Pink Palace in 2012!!).

Be a Cherry Bomb[shell]!

Posted on June 28, 2011 in Inspiration by | 1 comment

Ooooooobviously we wanted to do a firework print. Given. But not just run of the mill, bought-at-South-of-the-Border sparkler kind of fireworks. We wanted to go BIG…

When Janie was little, her mom, who is one billion percent more of a rule breaker than Janie (apparently it is hereditary), used to talk about cherry bombs – AKA M-80′s. When she was a kid, she & her cousins would find dead fish (they were already dead, people) that washed up on the beach, put cherry bombs inside, light them, and then sling-shot them over the tennis courts while her parents were enjoying their afternoon game. Not joking.  And cherry bombs are now…hmmm, surprisingly illegal.  Janie says there are more stories where that came from, we’re a little worried.

So go celebrate BIG this holiday weekend. You are the bomb in this print!
