The start of the Resort season is a big deal around here.  See… it’s in our DNA as a brand- we were born into the Resort lifestyle so we absolutely cherish this time of year.  It signals the best times in life with family & friends – it’s ageless, effortless and colorful (of course, Lilly kind of invented that part of it)  And while everyone else starts their year in Spring, of course we start ours with Resort.  Would it make sense any other way?!?

The best part of  starting a new year is kicking off a new, fun theme.  Our theme this year is “Lilly in Bloom.“  Each season, which also has it’s own guiding theme, we’ll be tipping our hat to the colorful florals that make us all so happy (and look so darn pret-ty!)  Resort 2011 starts us off with “Jungle Glam.” 

Our theme (read: obsession) is resort chic gone Jungle Glam.  It’s all about colors that make you smile, dresses that FORCE you to stay out all night, and sweaters that demand to be stacked, then gifted, restacked… but never regifted.  Tunics are a girl’s best friend because they are worn over teeny bikinis, over jeans, over resort white pants, over EVERYTHING!  Prints are clutch-your-stomach, make-your-eyes-pop, have-to-have frenzied! And tinsel (aka: big baubles!!) should be hung from everything!

Our cheeks are pink with the glow of an all-out, jungle-glam, lilly-filled EXCESSIVE holiday!!  Resort product hits store shelves and online FRIDAY!

Of course Spring & Summer are high-times for all Lilly Lovers, but the team at Persnickety Palm loves a celebration any time of the year!  A perfect example of their we-know-how-to-have-fun attitude is the annual Halloween parade that happens every year (on Halloween day so mark your calendars!) – marching right past their shop!  What a perfect excuse to sneak shopping into your holiday celebrations!

Halloween is a special time of year for us because Leesburg’s Annual Halloween Parade is the longest running Halloween parade east of the Mississippi River – 54 years and counting. Who knew????? Costumed revelers, floats, horseback riders and marching bands strut their way right past our shop, passing out candy to the trick-or-treating crowds that line the street. It kicks off a great season of festivities for Persnickety Palm, with our own “Annual Turkey, Tinsel and Birthday Cake” celebration in honor of Lilly Pulitzer’s birthday, Thanksgiving, and an amazing Christmas season. And the Lilly jeep, with some of our favorite Minnies waving from the backseat, is always a huge hit in Leesburg’s annual Christmas parade. Don’t get us wrong, we L-O-V-E Spring and Summer, but the late-year holidays are a great opportunity for us to show why Resort Chic really is a year ’round way of life.

What else makes us unique? Maybe it’s our pink and green leopard print tissue paper. Or maybe the custom pink and green leopard print curtains. Why? Like Lilly we love animals, especially cats. (Psst – your four-legged friends are always welcome in our shop!) And is there anything more classically chic than leopard print (with a Lilly Pulitzer inspired twist, of course!)? Yes, we’re a little different than your typical Signature Store, from the historic building to the Harold Kraus paintings on the wall to the bamboo ladders showing off our Murfee scarves and vintage Lilly Pulitzer fabrics. But at Persnickety Palm we believe that being a little different is “Essentially Lilly.”

Our Palm Village store in the Historic Biltmore Village, is certainly one-of-a-kind and it all starts with their amazing location.  The setting is gorgeous and the store itself keeps up with those expectations as it includes beautiful pieces from the Lilly Pulitzer line of furniture and has lots of Lilly touches.  So how do we celebrate the uniqueness that is Palm Village? Palm Village opened its doors in July of 2010 to bring a dose of color to Historic Biltmore Village: a historic district directly outside the entrance of the Biltmore Estate and about 2 miles south of downtown Asheville, NC. Palm Village is a labor of love for manager, Eleanor Quinn and the other Lilly lovers that manage and work in the store as well as the partners that make up LMP Asheville. (the official “owner”) Asheville, a town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina, is a town that is known for its diverse culture and arts, for being the home of the United States largest home, the Biltmore Estate, and for being a Mecca for local micro breweries having been named Beer City USA for the third year in a row. (we share that little nugget of info any chance we get!) Needless to say, Palm Village and the artistic Lilly Pulitzer works of art that we sell, took the town by surprise and the love is catching on like wildfire! We always get so excited seeing people all over town wearing Lilly Pulitzer – especially since it used to be hard to find!

At Palm Village, giving back is a core value and has been instrumental in getting the word out that we are here! This Thursday from 5-7pm, we are having a shop and share event and will be donating 10% of the event proceeds to the Mission Hospital Cancer Campaign as they are raising money for a cancer wing at the hospital. We are also excited to raise money for them by raffling off one of our Lilly Pulitzer printed cruiser bikes: all raffle tickets are $5!  Come join us!

So it’s not a secret that Lilly Lovers love Fall for more reasons than the beautiful foliage and all the excuses to eat yummy food – we love Fall because we love football!  Weeeellll… ok. Let’s be clear – we love tailgating.  Sure, we eventually go inside and watch the game but our true love is the tailgate party, looking cute and having fun with all of our friends.  Perhaps the reason we don’t get as excited about the game as we do about the pre-game is because we don’t know enough about football to appreciate the finer points.  Which is EXACTLY what Christie Leigh Mueller thought when she authored the book, Gridiron Belles; A Guide to Saturdays in Dixie.  Her passion is SEC football. And though she absolutely counts herself a Lilly Lover, she actually loves the game as much as she loves to party! (shocking, we know.) Her book celebrates what it means to be a southern Belle on Saturdays in the Fall and forces the rest of us to give up our excuses and join in the mania that is SEC football!  In Christie Leigh’s words…

What made you write the book?
I was growing restless watching football with just guys. I wanted my sister and sorority sisters to enjoy Saturdays in the fall as much as I do. Not to mention, there is a huge overlap of etiquette and SEC football… and since I’m passionate about both, it was a perfect combination for a book for women!

Where did you go to school and what is your favorite football team?
I went to Rhodes College, a small liberal arts school in Memphis, TN. While Rhodes College has my money, the Auburn Tigers have my heart and loyalty.

How many games have you been to? Have you ever missed a tailgate?
I never miss a tailgate if I am going to a game. I always schedule at least 4 to 6 hours to tailgate, that way I have time to relax, visit other fans and catch other SEC games on TV.

Describe a typical game day outfit- what should it be?
My typical game day outfits consist of dresses, pearls and a team tattoo on my cheek! The South and its Belles are so beautiful, we love our wardrobes to match so nothing less than your best with team flare is what I encourage on game day in Dixie.

The biggest revelation I had during my days of research was_________.
Not all Belles know about college football or want to know about college football, but generally speaking, Gents want their Belles to know at least a little bit about college football!

Without a doubt, my absolute favorite thing about football in the South is________.
Escaping reality 12 Saturdays a year and being surrounded by something bigger than myself. I also love being surrounded by Gridiron Belles; they are passionate, strong and involved in all of the glory that is Saturdays down South.

Our history: Some years ago now, Janet Lane-Roberts, a British Lilly Lover, moved from northern Virginia where she owned a children’s store, to Virginia Beach. Janet’s daughter Emily, had always wanted her to open a Lilly store, and thought, what better time than the present?! That could be where this story ends happily ever after, but… the store took off and just as Lilly did many years ago, Janet found her self ready to expand. At this point, customers were traveling hours to get their hands on the sassy pink and greens of Lilly that brought smiles to their faces. So when the opportunity to open a second store came up, Janet jumped at the idea and here we are!  This Fall marks the beginning of our fourth amazing year here in Williamsburg. We are now making our own colorful mark on this historic town!

Dress Designer Abraham recently took a trip around the world, 10 stops in all, in search of inspiration. His trip took him on a multi-city tour from Philly to New York (Fashion’s Night Out pit-stop!) to LA to Finland to Denmark to Sweden to London to New York and back to Philly, where an exhausted but inspired Abraham, got to work on capturing all the amazing designs he saw. We wanted to share a few pics of the Nordic inspirations he found along the way and of course, we couldn’t NOT share pics of some of the fun & good eats he had too! Here’s Abe in his own words about his world tour…

I started my trip in NYC for Fashion’s Night Out where the streets of New York became runway shows. Everyone was out to see and be seen and absolutely dressed-to-impress. It’s always great night to be inspired by all the Fashionistas of the city. (Sadly, I couldn’t party too much since I had to catch an early plane with my coworkers to LA) Once in LA, we took a trip to the monthly market at the Rose Bowl (d)- a must-stop for vintage shopping. (check out those vintage Lillys (a) we found!). After three short days there, I jumped back onto a plane making a quick stop in Finland (even the airport (b) itself was beautiful) before heading to Denmark. Copenhagen is a city very much like LA ( the LA of Scandinavia) and the vintage shopping, bike rides, boat tours and galleries (e) really got my creative juices flowing. Before I knew it I was back on a plane to spend three days in Stockholm. The Swedes really know what classic dressing is all about. (examples- check out those window shots! (c)) I could not get over the beauty of the city and the people. Ten days later I was back at the Pink Palace of Philly (not to be mistaken for the Pink Palace of Copenhagen (f)) armed with so many ideas for our Fall ’12 and Resort ’12 collections. I can’t wait to see all the new dresses in stores and on our customers!

Last Friday we introduced our partnership with The Breast Cancer Charities of America (BCCA) for the month of October.  And today, we are very excited to have them in our Guest House so they can tell you a little bit more about themselves.  Fortunately there are a lot of organizations that have an active role in fighting breast cancer and the toll it takes on our lives but sometimes it’s hard to understand who does what.  Which is another reason we wanted to feature more about BCCA because we really believe in the role they’re playing right now (with their aptly named “Help Now Fund“) in the lives of women affected by breast cancer.  We really encourage you to read more about this wonderful group and get involved to help make a difference.  Here’s Erica…

Can you give us a brief understanding of what The Breast Cancer Charities of America is all about?

The Breast Cancer Charities of America is the only non-profit bringing the “integrated cancer care” message to the women of America, where the care ‘program’ involves every aspect of body, mind and spirit treatment to the cancer prevention, treatment and recovery effort. Integrated cancer care is employed in addition to, not in place of, orthodox medicine as many studies show that techniques like diet, exercise, and social support can be as powerful as drugs and surgery. Through our iGoPink: Fashion Fights Breast Cancer campaign, BCCA brings a fresh approach to finding the cure.

BCCA exists to deliver this message to women with breast cancer and to educate healthcare providers with this news. The result: we will change medicine and we will save lives.

Pam Halferty and Emily Smith, owners of Lady Bird, have been “besties” since the first grade (don’t you dare ask them how old they are!) and though they hail from California, they both spent time on the east coast and fell in love with the Lilly Pulitzer brand.  Lucky for the ladies of San Marino, California that they decided to bring Lilly to the west coast and open up a Signature Store in March of 2010.  They knew the Pasadena community would love Lilly as much as they did and they were right!  They have great customers and Pasadena loves having a local Lilly shop where they can see all the goodies in person!  Here’s a little bit more about how these friends made Lady Bird a west coast Lilly Lover’s favorite!…
