Slip on your favorite colored McKim Sandals, it’s time to take a walk in the Lilly fashion lane. Our designers are the BEST and keep YOU in mind throughout the entire process. Every bow, zipper, lace and detail gets the team’s full attention and more.
Let’s start at the beginning… the team first comes up with a design vision for the season. They seek inspiration from fashion shows all over the world (HELLO Paris, New York, Milan & Hong Kong…), past seasons/vintage Lilly, and are OF COURSE experts of everything in Palm Beach. They take what’s trending and figure out what’s best for our energetic, color loving & jet setting customers. Our designers get to look through a brighter and more upbeat lens than other fashion designers, so they stay true to our resort chic culture. Within the vision, they dive into the color story, silhouettes, fabric and much more to create an overall look that will delight the Lilly girl.
Now off to the sketch board… our fashion designers are CONSTANTLY sketching. Each designer produces hundreds of sketches for each season yet only 15 or 20 will be made into samples. They keep in mind cut, fit and all generations of Lilly customers when plotting the line. Plus, every designer has to work across each category. Sweaters have to make sure their pieces fit over dresses… top designers’ fabric and patterns have to go with pants… everything must work together down to the bags and shoes.
Up next is the fitting process where the designers get to see what they once drew with pencil come to life. Then comes the not so glamorous job of computer data entry (ugh…). Literally every little component of a garment is entered into our system. It’s really the most important step though… if the wrong number of buttons is submitted for a style it messes up costing, ordering materials, etc. Details! Details! Details!
Besides being SUPER detail orientated, fashion designers are pros at many fields. Next time your English or Math class is making you yawn, you’ll envy our designers who studied sewing, fashion illustrating, draping, and merchandising in school. However, there is one class that doesn’t exist that they would have LOVED to take… Naming the Styles. At Lilly, our designers can’t use a name that’s been used in the past six years forcing them to get REALLY creative. Luckily, creativity is part of everyone’s DNA at Lilly and they’re always taking suggestions.
Who knows… maybe our next shift dress or tunic will be named after you!
