Our Vice President of Creative Communications, Janie Schoenborn, was inspired to write this blog by the #LillySaid Instagram challenge entries (as was the entire Pink Palace):
There’s so much to stop and think about when it comes to being thankful. Within the walls of the pink palace I have a bright pink office. Pink and print and happy happy times. It surrounds me 99% of the time – I am lucky. I spend my time thinking of ways to delight YOU, our Lilly Lovers…
When we started our #LillySaid Instagram campaign our objective was to honor Lilly’s birthday by spreading Lilly’s voice on the world wide web. On the morning of the third day of the hashtag campaign we released Lilly’s quote: “If you haven’t any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble”. Fast forward to 4 PM and I am in an eeeeternal meeting… lol don’t tell my boss I said that. I hop onto Instagram and search #LillySaid. I honestly have tears in my eyes writing this, every time I look at the pictures…you just blew me away. Every picture that YOU shared with us on how you give back, how you bring charity to your heart and help others…speechless.
Fast forward again to 10 PM that evening and the social media team was emailing bam bam bam about how touched we were. How we couldn’t choose a winner. How it was making us so proud of all of our Lilly Lovers.
Fast forward to the next morning and the company was buzzing about looking at the pictures. Everyone was so delightfully shocked at how touching every picture was. I sat next to Margaret (one of my FAVS) in a meeting and the first words out of her mouth were – “I WAS UP LAST NIGHT AND WAS OVERWHELMED BY #LillySaid”.
Ahhhhhh. Every picture was outstanding and we can’t choose a favorite but every image that captured the love we have for supporting our military made our hearts swell. And we want to HONOR those who have served our county. We want to thank them.
So we stop for a second and remember all of those who have truly served us. Allowed us to live happily in our pink walls and smile, laugh, designing happy prints and gorgeous dresses for the best times of our lives.
In 1919, President Wilson commemorated the first Armistice Day (which later became Veterans Day) with these words:
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
Today Veterans Day is very rightfully a federal holiday to celebrate and honor the pride we have in all who have served. At Lilly we recognize that “Freedom” is never “Free”… we celebrate our Veterans, we THANK YOU for your service and most importantly for reminding us about what is really important. While ‘honor’ is the right word, if I am going to translate into Lilly terms…sending tons and tons of love xxxxxx to everyone who has worn a uniform, even if not in PINK – it is the best outfit you will ever wear. We love you too.
